Atonement

Home / Index / Atonement
  • Definition: Atonement is the work by which Jesus took upon himself the sins of humanity, enduring the punishment they deserved, in order to reconcile people with God.
  • 1 John 2:2: « He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. »
  • Romans 3:25: « God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. »
  • Explanation: Atonement is central to biblical doctrine, which sees Jesus as the perfect Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Through his sacrifice, Jesus appeases God’s wrath against sin and restores the relationship between God and humanity.
