Repentance

God calls humanity to Repentance consistently, across the ages, using various means to reveal His love, justice, and desire for Reconciliation with humanity. Here are some ways God has called and continues to call people back to Himself, highlighting both similarities and differences between His calls in the past and today.

1. The Prophets and Scriptures

In the Old Testament, God often sent prophets to warn the people of Israel, calling them to turn from their sins and return to Him. Figures like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel continually reminded the people of God’s holiness and their need for Repentance to avoid judgment. This message of repentance was accompanied by promises of forgiveness and restoration.
Today, this call continues through the Bible, which remains a living and inspired message. The Scriptures still invite believers and non-believers to examine their lives in light of God’s teachings, to confess their sins, and to turn to Him. God’s Word is still conveyed through pastors, teachers, and those who witness to their Faith.

2. The Coming and Sacrifice of Jesus Christ

With Jesus Christ, God’s call to repentance takes on a new and profound dimension. Jesus preached repentance from the beginning of His ministry, saying, “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). In Jesus, God reveals His ultimate love for humanity by providing a direct path to Reconciliation. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus opened the way for the forgiveness of sins and invited everyone to come to Him to receive salvation.
Today, the call to repentance is still centered on Jesus Christ. His sacrifice remains at the heart of God’s invitation, and those who follow Him continue to proclaim the message of the Gospel. Jesus is the tangible proof of God’s deep desire for each person’s return, offering forgiveness and transformation to all who believe.

3. The Holy Spirit and Inner Conviction

After Jesus’ ascension, God sent the Holy Spirit to work in the hearts of believers and non-believers, convicting them of Sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8). The Holy Spirit works inwardly to remind individuals of their need for God, shedding light on dark areas of their lives and inspiring a desire for change and a return to God.
Today, the Holy Spirit continues to play this essential role. He works silently in people’s hearts, showing them their faults, and offering peace and assurance of forgiveness when they turn to God. This inner conviction is both personal and universal, as the Holy Spirit works wherever hearts are open.

4. Life’s Trials and Blessings

In both the Old and New Testaments, God often uses life’s circumstances to prompt people to reflect on their spiritual condition. Sometimes, trials, suffering, or times of crisis help people realize their fragility and need for God. At other times, blessings and moments of Grace lead them to thank God and draw closer to Him.
Today, God continues to use life situations to draw hearts toward Him. Difficulties can become opportunities to turn back to God, and blessings serve as reminders of His goodness. God’s call is thus perceptible in both the highs and lows of life, inviting us to turn to Him with humility and gratitude.

5. The Christian Community and Testimony

From the first disciples to the present day, God calls men and women to repentance through the testimony of the Christian community. The Church, through its teachings, charitable works, and brotherly love, is a channel through which God reveals His heart and calls for repentance.
Today, Christians are called to share the Gospel, to live lives of repentance and transformation, and to bear witness to God’s Grace. Through the Church and the life of each believer, God continues to show the way to a restored relationship with Him.

Conclusion

Yesterday and today, God calls humanity to repentance with love and patience, using various means adapted to each era’s circumstances. Through the Scriptures, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, life circumstances, and the testimony of the Christian community, God invites everyone to recognize their need for forgiveness, to turn from their sins, and to return to Him. This call is rooted in God’s desire to restore an intimate and personal relationship with each individual, and He promises forgiveness and eternal life to those who respond to this call with Faith and humility.
