Romans chapter 10
Introduction
In the previous chapter (Romans 9), Paul addressed God’s Sovereignty in election, explaining that not all who are descended from Israel are truly Israel. He showed that Israel’s rejection of Christ does not invalidate God’s faithfulness. In chapter 10, Paul shifts the focus to human responsibility and emphasizes the central role of Faith in salvation. He demonstrates that Christ is the fulfillment of the law and that God’s righteousness is accessible to all through Faith.
Text Summary
1. Israel’s Zeal Without Knowledge (Romans 10:1-4)
Paul begins by expressing his deep desire for Israel’s salvation. He acknowledges their zeal for God but notes that it is misdirected, as they seek righteousness through works of the law. He asserts that Christ is the end of the law, bringing righteousness to everyone who believes.
2. Righteousness Based on Faith (10:5-13)
Paul contrasts the righteousness that comes from the law, which relies on works (cf. Leviticus 18:5), with the righteousness that comes by faith. Citing Deuteronomy 30:12-14, he shows that God’s Word is near and accessible through faith. Paul emphasizes that confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in His resurrection leads to salvation. This righteousness by faith is offered to everyone, with no distinction between Jews and Gentiles.
3. The Necessity of Preaching the Gospel (10:14-17)
Paul highlights that faith comes from hearing, and hearing requires the proclamation of the Word. He uses rhetorical questions to emphasize the importance of sending preachers. Quoting Isaiah 52:7, he points out the beauty of those who bring the good news.
4. Israel’s Persistent Rejection (10:18-21)
Finally, Paul explains that although the Gospel has been proclaimed, many in Israel have rejected the message. He quotes Old Testament passages (Psalm 19:4, Deuteronomy 32:21, Isaiah 65:1-2) to show that this rejection was foretold and that God has revealed Himself to the nations while continuing to extend His hand to Israel.
Doctrinal Development
Righteousness Through Faith in Christ
Paul teaches that Christ is the end of the law (10:4), meaning He fulfills all its requirements. Jesus taught the same in Matthew 5:17: “I have not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it.”.
Righteousness by faith depends on Christ’s work, not on human effort (Ephesians 2:8-9).
The Universality of Salvation
Paul declares that “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (10:13, cf. Joel 2:32). Salvation is offered to all, reflecting Jesus’ teaching in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world…”
The Mission of the Church
Paul emphasizes that faith comes through hearing, and preaching is essential (10:14-17). Jesus gave a similar mandate in Matthew 28:19-20 (the Great Commission), calling His disciples to make disciples of all nations.
God’s Call to Israel
Israel’s rejection of the Gospel does not surprise God: the prophets had foretold it. However, Paul shows that God continues to call Israel to Repentance.
Key Verse
Romans 10:9: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
This verse summarizes the heart of the Gospel: salvation is a gift of God accessible through faith in Christ, expressed by sincere confession and belief in His resurrection.
